A Note from Principal Dave Ksanznak

April 11, 2014

Dear Parents,

I would like to thank our PTA for sponsoring our visiting author program yesterday for our students. Steve Swinburne was outstanding and hopefully your child shared what they learned from his presentation on Thursday. I feel fortunate to have the support of our PTA in providing programs like the author visit for the students here at Hamagrael.

Next week all Bethlehem Central Schools will be closed for April break. School will resume on Monday, April 21.

The week of April 21-25 is Healthy Kids week across the district. There are activities planned during the week to help students understand and experience the benefits of nurturing their bodies and minds in fun and challenging ways. Your child will be bringing home a lot of information about the events today. I would like to thank the Healthy Kids Committee, our Hamagrael PTA and co-chairs Melissa Aiezza-Carpinello and Erin LaDue for organizing the program for us this year.

As part of Healthy Kids week we will be collecting items for the local food pantry. Each grade level has been assigned to bring in items if possible. Children can drop off items in the front hallway.

Grade 5: Laundry detergent, dryer sheets, dish soap, sponges
Grade 4: Soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant
Grade 3: Cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, jelly, peanut butter, coffee, tea
Grade 2: Canned beans, baked beans, peas, green beans or other canned vegetables
Grade 1: Canned tuna or chicken
Kindergarten: Canned fruit, applesauce

On Tuesday, April 22 the Bethlehem Board of Education will be completing the school budget for the upcoming school year. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the high school. You can find all of the information regarding the budget process to date on the district website.

On Wednesday, April 23 we will celebrate Administrative Professionals Day here at Hamagrael. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such dedicated people who fill the role so well at Hamagrael. Patty Farrell, Sue Doherty and Jeanette Machlowski are exceptional in handling their diverse responsibilities and always ready and willing to help children, parents and staff in any way they can to help our school run smoothly. Thanks Patty, Sue and Jeanette for all you do for all of us in our school community.

Our district calendar has our Hamagrael Spring Concert scheduled for Thursday, May 22. To help with your planning here is the program for the evening:

Hamagrael Spring Concert
Thursday, May 22, 2014
Auditorium

Grade 4: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Orchestra & Choir

Grade 5: 7:30-8:30 p.m. Orchestra, Band & Choir

All students in grades 3-5 will be taking the New York State Math Exams April 30-May 2. As educators we realize that each child is unique and learns in different ways. Because of this we do not place a lot of emphasis on this single assessment and use observations, assignments and projects to gauge student understanding of material that has been taught. During the state assessments we just ask the students to give their best effort. If you have any questions about the assessments please feel free to contact me. You can also find information about the assessments on our district website under the heading “academics”.

Have a wonderful April Break.

Sincerely,

Dave Ksanznak
