Happy May! Hard to believe that there is little more than a month of school remaining. Although the close of the school year is just around the corner, there are nevertheless still many exciting PTA and PTO sponsored events and programs ahead.
May 13-17 is Healthy Kids week. The committee, as always, has many exciting activities planned. Stay tuned for information that will be coming home, and please visit the Healthy Kids Committee webpage for more information on Healthy Kids Week. Our next PTA and PTO meeting is May 14 at 7 p.m. During the meeting we will discuss, among other things, the wind down of the PTA and the proposed 2013-2014 PTO budget. The meeting will begin with a “Dance Crazy” demonstration in the Slingerlands gym. “Dance Crazy” is a ballroom dancing program geared toward 4th and 5th grade students. The students who join the Dance Crazy club will meet twice per week to learn various ballroom dances. The club members also participate in dance competitions with students from other capital region schools. This program would begin in the fall. Come and see what it’s about. Parents, bring your 4th graders to watch dancing and enjoy ice cream sundaes. A question and answer session will follow the performance. Following the Dance Crazy Demonstration we will convene in Mrs. Clarkson’s classroom for the remainder of the PTA/O meeting.
The annual Art Show, Ice Cream Social and the Buy One Get One Free Scholastic Book Sale event will take place on May 16. The Art Show and Book Fair will be held from 4:30-7:30 and ice cream will be served from 4:30-7:00. For the second year, Books for Giving will be held in conjunction with the Book Fair which provides the opportunity to purchase a book and donate another to the Slingerlands Library in honor of your child’s classroom teacher.
Local author James Preller is visiting Slingerlands Elementary on May 22-23. His published work include readers, picture books, and chapter books. He is perhaps best known for his fiction series for young readers, Jigsaw Jones. He will be meeting with all K-5 classes in the library to discuss his books and the writing process, and will autograph books as well. This author visit is part of a series of visits to BCSD's schools organized by the school librarians in collaboration with building teachers and PTAs.
The School Budget vote and district election is on May 21. Please be sure to go out and vote!!
Our last formal PTA/PTO meeting will be held on June 11. At this time we hope to begin the process of winding down of the PTA and vote on the PTO budget and new officers.

At our November general PTA/PTO meeting, we were fortunate to have Dave Hurst (BCSD K-12 Math Supervisor) and Andrew Baker (BCSD K-12 ELA Supervisor) present on the CORE curriculum. Box tops for Education
Do you have a pile of box tops sitting on your window sill? Don’t forget to send them to school. Last year we raised over $700 with all those tiny cardboard and plastic labels, so it is worth the effort of clipping them.
There are collection boxes in the main entry and in the kindergarten-first grade wing. We collect current (non-expired) box tops. Please cut them out and please don't submit anything that doesn't say "Box Tops for Education."

It’s a fun, inspiring way to celebrate all the good your clipping (and clicking) did last year – and how we can do even more this year. Please share this video with your friends and family!
