BCHS senior Denali Relles has been named a 2018 National Merit Scholar. He is one of only 2,500 students nationwide to win the prestigious scholarship. Relles was among six Bethlehem students selected as National Merit Finalists earlier this year.

We recently caught up with Relles, who will enroll at McGill University in the fall, to ask him a few questions:

How did you choose McGill?
I chose McGill because of things I heard from friends and my parents’ friends about the quality of its academics. Of course, I also am excited to be living in the city of Montreal: it seems exciting and interesting, and this certainly affected my decision.

Do you have a planned major?
I am planning to study computer science at McGill.

You seemed surprised to learn that you were a scholarship winner. What does it mean to you to be one of only 2,500 National Merit Scholarship winners nationwide?
I am really flattered to think that I am in the top 2,500 National Merit Scholarship winners. However, I know that this one recognition, which is largely based on one test we took at the beginning of our junior year, is not a great measure of achievement. Though I enjoy attention being brought to me, many of my peers who were not even semi-finalists are certainly more accomplished than me in various ways.

You have been part of the successful Science Bowl and Science Olympiad teams. Are there other extracurriculars or community activities you have been involved in while at BC?
I am very proud of my involvement in sports at BC. My time on the cross country team, wrestling team, and ultimate Frisbee team included some formative experiences. I firmly believe that every student should participate in some sport at least once in high school.

What are you most looking forward to during your last summer before college?
This summer, I want to be with my friends as much as possible before we all go our separate ways.

Congratulations to Denali on this honor! Learn more about the National Merit Scholars program.
