Bethlehem Central Middle School sixth-graders were “foiled” this past week as they honed their fencing skills in physical education class. The week-long lesson is part of the school’s mission to expose students to different types of physical activity.

“It exposes the sport to some kids who may never have heard about it or may want to learn more about it,” said sixth-grade PE Instructor Piera Canuto, who noted all of BCMS’s fencing equipment was purchased through fundraisers.

The students engage in 2-touch bouts and, afterward, shake hands and get in line to face another opponent.

“It gives us a workout and really teaches us about good sportsmanship,” said sixth-grader Anastasia Moore.
