Slingerlands honors service to country and community at annual Veteran's Day assembly
A Slingerlands' Veterans Day tradition continued Wednesday, as students handed poppies to those who have served their country in the armed forces and those who serve their communities as public officials at an afternoon assembly.
The assembly was put on by second grade students in Mrs. Ann-Marie Bacher's class. It included music and words paying tribute to the nation's veterans, as well as a brief history of Veteran's Day.
The assembly began with Mrs. Bacher's students giving poppies to the guests of honor — veterans from wars ranging from World War II to Iraq, and public servants ranging from Bethlehem Town Board members to School Board members to U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, whose Congressional district includes BC.
The assembly included a special presentation from U.S. Army Lt. Col. Chris Ciccone, who talked about his time serving in Tikrit, Iraq, in 2005. Ciccone concluded that while he was proud to serve his country, there is nothing better than returning home to his family. An East Greenbush resident, Ciccone's wife and daughter were in attendance at the assembly.
