Letter from Principal Heffernan, Apr. 13

Filed in Glenmont by on April 13, 2018

Dear Families,

Our faculty had the opportunity to participate in math professional development days with our recent guest Dr. Yeap Ban Har, an internationally known math educator from Singapore. The thought provoking sessions have prompted us to make changes to how we teach math, some minor and some a little bigger. If your child mentions that math lessons have changed a bit, now you’ll know why.

The NYS English Language Arts testing is now completed. Students in grades 3-5 will have NYS math testing on May 1 and 2, and our fourth graders will also have the NYS written test on June 4 and the performance portion of the test on May 30.  Thank you for trying to avoid appointments for your children on those dates.

We’re excited for an upcoming performance by NYC dancers from the Harambee Dance Company. As explained on their website (http://www.harambeedancecompany.com/), the Harambee Dance Company combines African and African-American dance and music and presents it all from an innovative and exciting new contemporary perspective. Many thanks to our PTA for funding this wonderful opportunity for our children.

Our fifth graders will have their panoramic class photo taken on Monday (rain date is Thursday).

If you have any neighbors or friends whose children will be starting kindergarten in the fall, can you please let them know about our upcoming Kindergarten 101 event? It will be held on Thursday, April 26 at 6:30pm at Slingerlands Elementary School.

Here’s hoping for some warm and sunny weather soon!

Sincerely,

Laura Heffernan

Principal
