Dear Families,

  • December 24 – January 1 – No School, Winter Break
  • January 2 – School resumes
  • January 2 – BOE Meeting, Eagle, 7pm
  • January 8 – PTO Meeting, 7pm
  • January 10 – Grade 4 Math & Science Night, 7pm
  • January 16 –  BOE Meeting Slingerlands 7pm
  • January 17 – Slingerlands Cultural Festival, 7pm

During this holiday season of celebration, giving, and family gatherings, I am reminded of the following quote from the Dalai Lama:

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.

Without them, humanity cannot survive.”

I feel very fortunate to be at Slingerlands Elementary where our teachers show love and compassion to our students’ lives every day.  Over the past few weeks, many of our children and families have participated in activities that help teach children compassion, empathy, and kindness.  A huge thank you to all of you for helping with these collections!

  • We collected 3 full bins of toys for the Capital District Toys for Tots program
  • The children exceeded my challenge to them to fill a box from each classroom with food for our Sharing and Caring program!
  • Two of our fifth-grade girls, Lilly Kahn and Lili Suich, led a Community Service Project to collect clothing for an organization in Schenectady called “ Things of my Very Own.”  They did a fabulous job creating a plan, communicating, and collecting. The brought two carloads to the organization this week. Great job girls! Click here for pictures

Although I was not here for the Staff Appreciation lunch, I heard it was wonderful!   A sincere thank you to Jane Fronheiser and Brooke Donovan, for coordinating the special event.  The staff always looks forward to being able to sit and relax over a delicious lunch – what a treat!

After the holidays we will begin a recycling program for markers.   It is called Crayola ColorCycle – a program designed to repurpose used markers rather than sending them to a landfill.  If you are cleaning out over the break, please bring your used markers to school. There will be a bin in the main lobby to collect them.  Read here for more information.

I hope that all of you enjoy the time with your family to celebrate each other and enjoy the special time together!

Happy Holidays!!

Warmly,

Heidi
