Letter from Principal Bonacquist, Oct. 23

Filed in Slingerlands by on October 23, 2020

Dear Families,

Our students at Slingerlands have really settled in to the new school year.  Our kids are happy and engaged!

Important Information for the week ahead:

Guidelines for Costumes for October 30

Since we will not be able to have a parade, we would love to have you take a picture of your children dressed in their costume, favorite hat or black and orange and submit it to the Costume Folder.  We will then create a slideshow with music that we will use as our Costume Parade.  The children will view this during their class party. These are due by Sunday, October 25th.

Real Kids Wear Pink Coin Drive

Over the past two weeks we collected $1,000.11 to donate for Breast Cancer Research.  Thank you all SO much for your generosity!! Check out all the pink outfits in support of this initiative – Real Kids Wear Pink Pictures!

Virtual Fun Run

The pictures will be posted soon on the Slingerlands PTO Facebook page!

Strike for Hunger

Kids can ‘vote’ for their favorite team by bringing in a food item and placing it in a box for the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Tampa Bay Rays. The food that we collect will be donated to the Bethlehem Food Pantry.  The Food Drive runs through October 30th.  Thank you for supporting this important initiative!

Missing Library Books

We are still missing many library books from last spring!  At this point, we are missing 87 books, which total almost $1,200!!!  If we are missing a book from you, a slip went home last week.  Please check your shelves again.  We would really like to get all the books back so kids can continue to enjoy them!!

Parent Teacher Conferences

We will still be having teacher conferences this year – they will be virtual. Your child’s teacher will be in touch with you about setting up a date and time. The dates for early dismissal are:

November 19 – 11:45

December 4 – 11:45

December 9 – 11:45

IMPORTANT November 19 is the first of three scheduled half-day Teacher Conference days for elementary schools. For THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, you are asked to complete this form so we know what your child will be doing at dismissal. Dismissal is scheduled for 11:45am. NO LUNCH will be served. Please complete a separate form for each child. Additional information will be sent out regarding what time cars can enter the parking lot.

School Pictures –

We won’t have our traditional school pictures with Adirondack Pictures this year as we cannot have any visitors in the school.  The PTO is working with a local photographer to take pictures on a weekend.  The pictures will be outside, in front of the school.  Click here for more information!

PTO Spirit Wear Sale

Our PTO Spirit Wear Sale is up and running! Please read the information below and check out our store by clicking on the link. The sale runs until Monday, November 9th.

  • ALL orders will be completed and distributed at the same time. Choosing a shipping option will not expedite an order.
  • Please remember that orders will be distributed at any time during the week stated
  • Wicked Smart is not responsible for backordered items. All items are checked for stock before the website is built. If items are out of stock at the time the store closes, Wicked Smart will deliver the remainder of the store and notify customers when the backorder items arrive.
  • The storefront must have a minimum of 12 orders to proceed with production.
  • Heather Reid and Lester Betor are Co-Coordinators. We will pick up the items that have the shipping option “Pick up by Coordinator” (no cost) and all items will be sent home with your child. If items are “gifts”, please email either Heather ( or Lester (  with your request and we will arrange a pick up.
  • Orders that choose “Pick Up at Wicked Smart” and decide to change their delivery option will be charged for shipping.

The start of the new school year has gone better than anyone expected!  I am so proud to be part of the BC community! I am so grateful for the leadership from the district, the commitment and talent of our Slingerlands teachers and staff and the support from all of you.  I have decided to, once again, postpone my retirement.  I anticipate that my last day will be April 9th. I can’t thank you enough for supporting me, the school and especially your child during these challenging times.

Have a great weekend!

Upcoming Dates to Remember:

  • October 30: Halloween Day (see costume guidelines above)
  • November 4: BOE Meeting, 7pm
  • November 11: Veterans Day, NO SCHOOL
  • November 19: Parent Conference Day, EARLY DISMISSAL

Daily Reminders:

Cars can enter the parking lot at 9:00.  We will begin letting cars through as soon as the buses are done, which is about 9:15.  If you are running a little late and do not see any staff member still out in the back, you may have to park and walk your child up to the door and ring the bell.

Dismissal –

Parents will be allowed in the parking lot at 2:55.  When the weather turns bad, we will likely back this time up again to as early as 2:45.

Walkers / Bike Riders –

Bikers and walkers will be released at 3:15.

If it rains and your child will NOT be walking/riding, please contact the office and let us know.

COVID Tracker

Please remember to complete this each morning for each of your children. This needs to be completed everyday, EVEN if your child is home sick or is in quarantine.  If you haven’t completed it, we will be giving you a reminder email.
