As a culmination to the Elsmere’s One School, One Book event, author and illustrator Grace Lin visited the school on Wednesday, May 9. All of the students had just completed reading Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, an award winning book that Lin wrote.

During her visit, Lin met with all students K-5. For grades 4 and 5, Lin went behind the scenes and talked about her inspiration for Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, while Grades K-1 discussed what goes into making a book. Grades 2 and 3 learned lots of fun facts about the “Lunar New Year,” which Lin said was the inspiration for her books Year of the Dog and Year of the Rat.

One of the common threads of her presentations was that Lin writes in order to learn.

“You know how teachers tell you to ‘write what you know,'” said Lin to a group of second and third graders. “Well I’m writing about what I WANT know. What I want to learn about.”

Many thanks to Ms. Lin for visiting our library and sharing her stories.
