BC Transportation Director Karim Johnson

At its December 16 meeting, the Bethlehem Central Board of Education appointed Karim Johnson as the district’s new transportation director.

Johnson has 16 years of experience as a public school transportation leader in the southeast, most recently as an administrator with the Colleton County School District in South Carolina. At Colleton County, Johnson was responsible for the redevelopment of the district’s transportation routing plan to increase efficiency while meeting high safety standards and ensuring a quality user experience for that district’s 5,500 students.

As head of transportation at Bethlehem, Johnson will oversee a staff of 115 drivers, mechanics, bus attendants and support staff. The BC transportation team serves 4,300 students in seven schools with a bus fleet that includes 130 vehicles.

“We are very excited to welcome Karim Johnson to BC,” said Superintendent Jody Monroe. “With a proven track record of success in managing complex transportation needs, routing issues, and budgetary matters, Karim will be a great asset to a department that continues to deliver safe, reliable transportation for our students.”

Superintendent Monroe said several members of the transportation department took part in the interview and selection process.

“While all done remotely, we were able to provide our transportation team with a unique opportunity to be part of the process,” said Monroe. “And we think that in doing so we were not only able to find the very best candidate in Karim Johnson, but we were able to help establish a strong rapport between manager and team from the very beginning.”

Johnson’s first day on the job will be Monday, December 21. He will replace outgoing transportation director Cindy Jurewicz, who will retire from BC on December 31, after 18 years of service to the district, including six years in the lead transportation role.
