Filed in BCMS by on May 3, 2017

BCMS eighth grader Rachel LeeBethlehem Central Middle School eighth grade student, Stacey Lee, is the youngest student selected for the summer 2017 EDGE (Educating Girls for Engineering) program at Union College. The Union College EDGE program is an intensive, two-week engineering program that is typically for students across the country in the upper high school levels.

Lee learned about the program through her BCMS ELA teacher Lisa Michaels while working on a project that showcased Lee’s passion for advocating through problem solving.

“Stacey is sensitive to the needs of those around her,” said Michaels. “She seeks out many perspectives and has the keen ability to pay close attention to details.”

EDGE combines real-life college learning and living experiences with activities intended to interest girls in studying science and engineering in college and undertaking a career in one of those disciplines.  Additionally, the program intends to help redress the serious and continuing under-representation of women in engineering.

Over the course of the two-week program Lee will visit a local school for children with special needs where she will then learn how to apply the engineering design process to adapt toys and tools for use by those children.

This will allow her get involved in all aspects of engineering, from theory and academic learning to field trips and activities where real-life examples of engineering are studied.

In addition to attending EDGE, Lee will also be attending Columbia University’s Three Week Summer Immersion program where she will study Intro to Trial Advocacy.

“Stacey has an insatiable thirst for learning,” said Lisa Michaels. “And has already created and set goals in motion that will lead her to become an engineer.”

BC congratulates Stacey Lee on her wonderful academic accomplishments!
