BC’s Farm to You Fest is Oct. 2-7

Filed in Eagle by on September 26, 2017

Dear Eagle Parents,

The Eagle Healthy Kids Committee is excited to introduce our 9th Annual Farm to You Fest, which is a statewide celebration of local farms and food. We hope your child will enjoy celebrating Farm to You Fest both at school and with you at home.

Below are some ways to participate. Enjoy!

AT EAGLE ELEMENTARY…

Squash Hunger Produce Drive (All week): Donate some fresh NY fruits and veggies at school for local people in need. Collection bins are at each of the schools. Designated volunteers will bring them to McCarroll’s/Delmar Marketplace each day. Any fresh produce is welcome (butternut squash, apples, carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, onion, beets, pears, etc.) View more information below.

Try School Lunch (All week): Did you know that many of the fruits and veggies in our school lunches come from local farms? Why not give these farm-fresh lunches a try? We have local apples and apple cider from Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont, NY. Tomatoes, Squash and Corn on the Cob from Brizzell Farms in Melrose, NY. Chobani Yogurt made in New Berlin, NY using milk from NY dairy cows. As always, all our milk is locally sourced from Sycaway Creamery in Troy, NY and comes from New England dairy cows.

Pack a Farm Fresh Snack (All week): Pack whole fruits or veggies for snacks this week. Sliced apples and pears, cucumbers, carrots…all in season in NY now!

Farmers Market Scavenger Hunt (Saturday, October 7): Visit any local farmers market with your checklist in hand. Turn in your completed checklist at the Delmar Saturday Farmers Market on October 7 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the BCSD Middle School, or at the main office by Tuesday, Oct. 10 for a farm-fresh prize at school! (2 local markets include Tuesdays at the Methodist Church on Kenwood Ave and Saturdays at the Middle School). A big thank you to our Delmar Farmers Market vendors for donating the prizes once again this year.

Garden Cleanup Day (Saturday, October 7): Close out Eagle’s Vegetation Sensation Garden on Saturday, October 7 from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. Please bring gloves and gardening tools if you have them.

SQUASH HUNGER DRIVE…

As part of Farm to You Fest Week, 2017 (October 2-6), our school will be collecting fresh produce to donate to people in need in Bethlehem and the greater Capital District.  “Squash Hunger” collection bins will be placed in the front lobby at school from Monday, October 2 through Friday, October 6.

  • Please bring in fresh produce from your own garden, a local farmers market or farmstand, or the grocery store (kids, please shop with your parents if you can!)
  • Produce does NOT need to be in a bag when placed in the collection bins
  • Please place soft produce (tomatoes, greens, etc.) and hard produce (apples, butternut squash, etc.) in their assigned bins so produce does not get damaged
  • A volunteer parent will be delivering the donations to our local drop-off spot at McCarroll’s Delmar Marketplace and we will be tracking the pounds each day!

We are donating this fresh food to shelters, pantries, and soup kitchens where it will be cooked into tasty, nutritious meals for those in need.

BCSD has donated 1,000s of lbs of fresh food to people in need – let’s see what we can do this year!
