Bethlehem Central High School’s Masterminds team is the New York State Champion for the fifth year in a row. On Saturday June 10, the Regional Champions from all over New York State competed at LeMoyne College in Syracuse. Bethlehem, representing the Capital Region, went undefeated in the tournament beating the champions from Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester.

This year’s team included Mike Connolly, Mike Bartlett, Alfonzo Prieto, Wenyuan Hou and Jimmy Cody. The team is coached by teacher Paul O’Reilly. Wenyuan Hou was named tournament MVP and Mike Bartlett was named to the all-tournament team.  The state championship is Bethlehem’s fifth in a row and the seventh since 2006 when the state championship competition began.

Masterminds is an academic competition very much like College Bowl. Four players play at a time and must answer questions on history, science, literature, pop culture, politics and more. Over 130 high schools participate in Masterminds from across New York State.  The Capital Region has around 30 high schools competing. Bethlehem has won the Capital Region Championship eleven times out of thirteen years since 2004. To learn more about Masterminds go to:  http://www.nymasterminds.com/
