BC senior is U.S. Presidential Scholar candidate

Anna Perry

Bethlehem senior Anna Perry has been named a U.S. Presidential Scholar candidate by the U.S. Department of Education. She is one of 4,500 students to receive the designation out of more than 3.6 million graduating seniors nationwide and is now in the running to represent New York state as one of the nation’s top high school students.

Candidates, including Perry, were selected for the Presidential Scholars program based on their outstanding performance on the SAT or ACT. Perry received a perfect score on the ACT. View the list of 2018 Presidential Scholar candidates.

Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars. These students are chosen from the list of candidates on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. Those who advance to become Presidential Scholars are notified in May and are invited to spend several days in June in the nation’s capital.

“It’s an exciting honor,” said Perry, who has hopes of attending Cornell University in the fall. The Ivy League school is one of several colleges Perry is waiting to hear from.

While her ultimate college destination is still unknown, Perry feels confident she will pursue a dual major in computer science and English wherever she goes. It is a combination she, and others, see as valuable.

“Computer science combines both math and science, subjects that I love,” said Perry. “And Mr. Neff, my physics teacher, tells his students ‘the most successful people in the tech world are the ones who can communicate.”

“That makes sense,” said Perry.

Physics is just one of several AP courses Perry has on her packed schedule. However, she also finds time for sports and extracurriculars.

“Music is a big part of my life,” says Perry, who plays French horn in the BCHS Wind Ensemble and Orchestra and plays trumpet as senior lead in the BC pep band known as The Hooligans.

Perry also runs. A lot. She is a member of the girls’ cross country team as well as the indoor and outdoor track teams. She credits the camaraderie she has found participating in those sports for providing some of her best memories of high school.

“From the time I was a freshman, everyone was so supportive. I have made so many good friends,” said Perry. “When I started, I would be at the back of the pack and older girls, juniors and seniors, would hang back with me and encourage me.

“I try to do the same now, for the younger girls,” she said.

Congratulations to Anna Perry on her Presidential Scholar nomination. She is making BC proud!
