BC soccer, field hockey seasons moved to spring

The Bethlehem Central School District announced this evening that a Sept. 10 decision to limit fall 2020 sports to only low-risk varsity level athletics (cross country, golf, swimming and tennis) has been upheld. The announcement was made following a public discussion at the Board of Education meeting on Sept. 16.

The decision on the return to sports was made by district administrators and did not require the approval of the Board of Education.

To preserve opportunities for student participation in soccer and field hockey – sports classified as moderate-risk by the state — Superintendent Jody Monroe recommended that the teams will be allowed to play next spring as part of the Fall Season 2 that begins March 1, 2021. Barring any COVID-related restrictions, Bethlehem will join many school districts across the state that have announced their soccer and field hockey teams will play in the Fall Season 2.

Fall 2 Season was established by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) to accommodate rescheduling of competition for high-risk sports (e.g. football and volleyball) and to give school districts and regions postponing moderate- or low-risk fall sports an alternative to a season that would start on Sept. 21.

“Our obligation is to ensure the safety of students and staff and to make sure we don’t jeopardize the successful reopening of our schools,“ said Superintendent Monroe. “I think that given the number of schools that have moved to the Fall 2 season, a spring start for these moderate-risk sports would be safer for everyone and would provide a more viable option for a season that could be planned well in advance without the uncertainty we are faced with during this most important transition back to the classroom.”

Supporters of the boys’ soccer team, the girls’ soccer team and the field hockey team were invited to speak at the Board of Education meeting.
