Six Bethlehem Central High School students are semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Seniors Henry Bievenue, Isabelle Courtney, Lleyton Emery, Navid Mazidabadifarahani, Avi Patel and Kevin Sui are among the highest scoring entrants from our state to The National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Approximately 1.6 million high school students enter the program each year.

“There was a lot of competition for this so it was great to hear the news,” said Emery.

The students earned the recognition based on their performance on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test out of 1.6 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools across the country. Over 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.

“It was a really nice surprise to hear I was a semifinalist,” said Bievenue.

All six students expressed excitement about this honor. They now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.

To become a finalist and ultimately win a scholarship, students are judged on several criteria, including academic performance, SAT scores, recommendations and their application to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Of the 1.6 million entrants, approximately 34,000 are honored as Commended Students, while the top 16,000 are honored as Semifinalists.

Congratulations to Henry, Isabelle, Lleyton, Navid, Avi and Kevin for their qualification as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists!
