Seven BC students named 2019 National Merit Semifinalists

Seven Bethlehem Central High School students have been named semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship (NMS) Competition.

Seniors Govind Chari, Jack DiligentLiam Karl, Evin Mattupurath, Olivia Namkoong, Ethan Royka and Margaret Sui were chosen as members of the nationwide pool of 16,000 semifinalists. That group accounts for less than one percent of high school seniors in the United States.

The students earned the recognition based on their performance on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test out of 1.6 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools. Over 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.

These academically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.

To become a finalist and ultimately win a scholarship, students are judged on several criteria, including academic performance, SAT scores, recommendations and their application to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In April following the fall test administration, high-scoring participants from every state are invited to name two colleges or universities to which they would like to be referred by NMSC. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. Approximately 34,000 are honored as Commended Students, while the top 16,000 are honored as Semifinalists.

Congratulations to Govind, Jack, Liam, Evin, Olivia, Ethan and Margaret for their qualification as National Merit Scholar semifinalists!
