At the New York State Odyssey of the Mind Competition last Saturday, a team of fifth-grade students from Hamagrael Elementary School captured an award for outstanding creativity and has earned an invitation to compete at the Odyssey World Finals next month at the Iowa State University.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international, creative problem-solving program for students in kindergarten through college. Odyssey of the Mind teaches students to learn creative problem-solving methods while having fun in the process. Hundreds of thousands of students in all 50 states and over 30 countries participate annually.
A total of five Bethlehem teams competed at the state tournament on Saturday, April 7 where they faced off against other top teams from across New York after big wins in regional competition. In addition to the Renatra Fusca Creativity award presented to the Hamagrael fifth-grade team, the BC teams also earned third, fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth place ribbons while competing at the state event.

Using critical thinking skills and lots of teamwork, the Odyssey teams are required to use their creativity to solve two problems: one spontaneous, and the other a prepared response to a hypothetical problem. Teams choose one of six problems and create a performance, or skit, to provide a response that is performed before a panel of judges. The teams spend several months preparing for competition, building props and perfecting their team response.
Congratulations to all of our Odyssey teams. They are making BC proud!
