Since the 2017-18 school year kicked off, the BCHS Robotics Club has been working hard to design, build, program and test their robots to compete in the 2018 VEX Robotics Competition In The Zone, held at Queensbury High School. 14 Bethlehem students competed in this year’s event.

VEX Robotics is a design platform for students providing hands-on discovery of career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

This is the club’s first year running at the high school and partaking in the competition. With the commitment of club President Christian DeFranco and members Luke Andres, Molly Bogardus, Abby DeFranco and Lance Tamchin, the BCHS Robotics Club Team A was able to come out on top.

“All the teamwork, late nights and dedication they put into being successful was great to witness,” said Club Advisor Eric Fana.

Team A performed well throughout the quarter- and semi- finals and squeaked by with a five-point lead in one of the final matches. Out of almost 40 teams in the competition, Team A was able to grab the title of Champion.

But that’s not all they left with.

“One great aspect of these competitions is the bond that form between teammates,” said Fana. “As problems arise, they have to quickly problem solve to overcome them.”

Team A’s next big challenge will be prepping for the Northern New York State Championship on Sunday, March 11 in Syracuse.

Lastly, the club wants to give a big shout out to Science/Technology Supervisor Jen Gonyea for all of her support, to all of the parents who were able to come and cheer the teams on, and to the Robotics Education Foundation for the team grant they provided.
