Filed in Archive by on April 26, 2017

On Friday, April 28, Bethlehem Central High School senior Andrew Taylor will accept the Youth Award from the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce at the 32nd Annual Chamber Awards Dinner.

At the dinner, the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce recognizes individuals from local businesses and the community for their contributions throughout the year. Among the awards given are:  Business Person of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and the Youth Award. Taylor is receiving the award for his community contributions as a volunteer firefighter with the Elsmere Fire Company.

“I’ve always wanted to help people,” said Taylor. “Both my father and grandfather are firefighters so it was natural for me to get involved.”

Taylor has served as a volunteer firefighter with the company for over a year.  Previously, he spent four years as part of the company’s Explorer Post 30, which is a sponsored program where young people between the ages of 13 and 18 are introduced to and learn about the volunteer fire service and are provided an important opportunity to serve the community.

“I commend Andrew for his commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the community,” said Superintendent Jody Monroe. “It takes those like Andrew, who are kind, responsible and diligent, to make our community safe and welcoming.”

Taylor will be attending Penn State Altoona in the fall where he plans to study criminology and continue as a volunteer firefighter. After two years, he expects to spend his final two years at Penn State University in University Park. When he makes the move, Taylor plans to forgo living on campus and instead hopes to board with the Alpha Fire Company in State Campus where he will receive free room and board in exchange for fire call response, daily and weekly firehouse chores and committing a specified number of 8 hour duty shifts.

BCSD congratulates Taylor on his Youth Award from the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce!
