BCHS students, teachers to be honored at Capital Region Scholars Recognition Dinner

On May 16, two Bethlehem Central High School seniors will be recognized as part of a select group of the region’s highest achieving student scholars.

Derin Gumustop and Olivia Namkoong have been invited to represent Bethlehem at the 33rd annual Capital Region Scholars’ Recognition Dinner, which will honor top students from more than 80 area high schools. The best part about this much-anticipated event? Each student scholar gets to invite a teacher who has had a significant influence on their education.

For Derin Gumustop, that teacher is Anthony Wilson, who teaches social studies at the high school.

Mr. Wilson’s breadth of knowledge and enthusiasm for what he teaches inspires me to have the same level of expertise in all that I do,” said Gumustop.

Olivia Namkoong selected high school English teacher Eileen Turo.

“I look up to Mrs. Turo because she has shaped my high school career and my outlook on the future,” said Namkoong. “Her passion for English and the success of her students is infectious, inspiring me to push myself harder and discover my full potential.”

Since 1987, the Scholars’ Dinner has been sponsored by CASDA, the Center for School Improvement at the University at Albany School of Education, and other community organizations, to honor the outstanding scholastic achievements of graduating seniors who have demonstrated scholarship, leadership, and service to their schools and communities.
