More than 200 school and community members embraced the unseasonably cool weather on Sunday, May 5 to support the 2019 Gift of Life 5K at the middle school. The race/walk is a community event sponsored by the school. Gift of Life helps provide lifesaving heart surgery to children from impoverished countries. A Kids’ Run was also part of the festivities.

It is the second year in a row that BCMS staff and students have helped organize the Gift of Life 5K. In addition to funding care for children with heart disease, support for Gift of Life empowers doctors and nurses to treat children in the country of birth, and builds sustainable pediatric cardiac programs in emerging countries. There are Gift of Life programs in 79 countries across five continents.

This year’s BCMS race organizers included staff members Jackie Munroe, Lisa Wood, and Beth Dounane. Students Amelia Kuhn, Sara Silver, Oona Ko Knight, Molly Wladis, Paige Bruce, Michael Bruce, and Arthur Huang also worked throughout the year to plan for the event.

Last fall, BCMS students and staff had a chance to meet a recipient of the Gift of Life when a child from Mongolia traveled to the U.S. with his mother for treatment.
