Happy Mindful Monday!
Part of Mindful Practice is being mindful of others. One way of doing this is to ask yourself: Am I infringing on their right to be who they are? This is an extremely important point similar to the fact that we come from different cultures. News flash: we also all have different personalities. Making someone feel bad about the things they are passionate about is disrespectful to their humanity and to the way that they were created. It drives me crazy when I hear comments about how “Weird” someone else’s hobby is when a lot of times it’s really just a display of originality. It’s not wrong to be different, it’s exciting. Treat people as such. Thank you BCMS. Be kind to each other and have a great day!

Happy Mindful Monday!

Part of Mindful Practice is being mindful of others. One way of doing this is to ask yourself:

Is what I’m saying or doing necessary?

Sometimes we make fun of people for no real reason with no purpose to our actions or words. Next time you say something negative about someone, think to yourself: “Do I need to be saying this?” If you’re saying it behind their back, the answer is likely no. If you’re saying it to their face, think about whether it will just hurt them or whether it will actually help them fix their lives. And just to be clear, pointing out imperfections falls under the “Unnecessary” category because often those are uncontrollable. It will probably make the person feel overwhelmingly self-conscious.

Thank you BCMS. Be kind to each other and have a great day!

Happy Mindful Monday! Part of Mindful Practice is being mindful of others. One way of doing this is to ask yourself: Am I demonstrating ignorance? I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that we live on a pretty big planet, harboring an ever-growing population of seven billion people. We all come from different cultural backgrounds, which makes the world diverse and should be celebrated. Names and traditions common to other nations should not be shocking because they display an originality and a creativity that is uniquely human. So when you are confronted with something unfamiliar, instead of immediately judging it, try to understand it and find something about it that you like. You could even make some friends that way! Thank you BCMS! Be kind to each other and have a great day!

Happy Mindful Monday
Silence game

The silence game is a classic mindfulness practice in Montessori classrooms around the world.
Unlike the traditional “quiet game,” which is often an attempt to trick unruly students in being quiet for a few minutes, the silence game is initiated when students are already feeling quiet and peaceful so that they can be successful.

When we play the silence game, we ask students to be as quiet as possible, not only with their voices but also with their bodies by keeping very still. Sometimes we use a little hourglass timer (one minute is good to start with), and a student tries to remain still and quiet until all of the sand runs out.

When the silence game ends, use a soft voice to ask your students what they heard or saw while they were so quiet. Ask them to try to keep the quiet, peaceful feeling with them as they go about their next activity.

Maybe one of your teachers will try this in class today!

Thank you BCMS. Be kind to each other and have a great day!

Happy Mindful Monday!

Take 10 breaths

Practicing mindful breathing is a simple and effective way to help people calm their bodies and be present.

Try taking 10 deep breaths together. Close your eyes or look down at the floor and put your hand on her belly. Breath in so deeply that the air fills your belly. Breathe out slowly. If 10 breaths are too many, start with five and work your way up together with practice.

Try this at least once today!

Thank you BCMS. Be kind to each other and have a great day!

Happy Mindful Monday BCMS!
Notice five things

Consciously noticing the world around you can help bring you back to the present, especially when you’re overwhelmed by stress or emotion. You can practice noticing five things you see, hear or feel through touch to help you be present. This can be a helpful game to play if you’re ever feeling anxious or upset. Mix it up sometimes and notice five things you hear instead. Try this today!

Thank you BCMS. Be kind to each other and have a great day!

Mindful Breathing
The breath is often looked as the root of mindfulness. It is a behavior that can either be done automatically, which is how most of us live, or intentionally and with awareness. Without trying to breathe in any special way, turn your attention to the physical sensation of breathing. Feel how the lungs and chest expand on each inhale and then relax on the exhale. Notice where in your body you experience the physical sensation strongest: is it in your chest? Stomach? Nose? There is no need to try to change what you are feeling; the goal is simply to focus on your breathing for a couple minutes in a nonjudgmental way. Mindful breathing is a good introduction to mindfulness and can help you feel more calm after just a minute or two.
