On Thursday, May 25, the Bethlehem Central High School Masterminds team — consisting of BC students Boyang Zhou, Wenyuan Hou, Alfonso Prieto, Michael Bartlett, Michael Connolly, and Jimmy Cody — won the Capital Region Championship of Masterminds held at Siena College.

In the tournament Bethlehem came from behind to win 5 games in a row beating excellent teams from Troy and Columbia High Schools.

Wenyuan Hou was named the all-tournament MVP while Michael Bartlett and Alfonso Prieto were named Capital Region Masterminds All Stars.

MasterMinds is a quiz bowl-style academic competition in which schools compete against one another with questions covering diverse topics in art, biology, chemistry, current events, geography, history, literature, music, political science, pop culture, religion and sports.

More than 30 area high schools compete in five leagues in the Capital Region. This year over 120 high schools competed in Masterminds across New York State.  Champions from the four regions (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany) will compete in Syracuse for the New York State Masterminds Championship.

Bethlehem teams have won the state championship four years in a row. If they win this year, it would be the school’s seventh New York State Championship since 2006.

The championship means BCHS’s Masterminds team will represent the Capital Region at the New York State Masterminds Championship on Saturday, June 10 held at Lemoyne College in Syracuse.

BC wants to congratulate the students and wish them luck in Syracuse!
