At its July 9 meeting, the Bethlehem Central Board of Education plans to appoint Luis Avilés as the district’s new supervisor of the World Languages department. He will replace Dr. Marisa Bel, who is resigning to take a new position outside the Capital Region.

The department’s mission is to develop confident and independent language learners who have the ability to communicate proficiently and possess a cultural competency necessary to be successful in an interdependent world. The World Languages department also includes the district’s English as a New Language (ENL) program.

Avilés was most recently Director of Research and Grants for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. He began his career in education in 2005 as part of the New York City Teaching Fellows Program, where he was assigned as a bilingual teacher in the South Bronx.

Avilés holds a master’s degree in bilingual education from Pace University and attended SUNY New Paltz for a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Leadership.

His appointment will be effective immediately.
