Board to discuss reopening plans Tuesday, July 28

Between August 1 and August 7, Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to make a decision regarding the reopening of schools in New York State. Before he does, all school districts must submit individual reopening plans for the 2020-21 school year. These plans are due July 31.

The Bethlehem Central School District has been working for several months to put plans in place in anticipation of a fall reopening. These plans will include various scenarios and options that incorporate remote learning, in-person instruction and combinations of both. These plans are to ensure the district can educate students and comply with swift changes in health and safety regulations related to COVID-19 that could take place throughout the school year. The district’s plan must follow guidance released last week by the New York State Education Department and the New York State Department of Health.

On Tuesday, July 28, the BCSD Board of Education will hold a special meeting online at 7 p.m. to provide a public overview of the proposed reopening plan and to discuss the plan before it must be finalized and submitted to the New York State Education Department. Comments submitted prior to the meeting will be read into the record at the meeting and should be addressed to the Board by emailing before 7 p.m. on July 28.

A written plan will be made available on the district website at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 31. The plan is subject to change and changes to the plan should be anticipated both before the start of the school year and throughout the year.

The district has scheduled three K-12 Parent Reopening Q & A Sessions that will also take place online. These will be 90-minute panel sessions where district and building administrators will be available to answer questions regarding plans for reopening or address any new updates from the state. These sessions will take place via Zoom. Links and instructions on how to access the meetings will be sent to all 2020-21 families the week of July 24.

  • Tuesday, August 4 at 3:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 5 at 9:30 a.m.

Similar Q & A sessions will be held specifically for students in grades 6-12 and will take place in mid-August.
