Construction update: More changes at BCHS

Filed in Archive, BCHS, District, District News by on May 24, 2019

Big changes are underway at Bethlehem Central High School, where the bulk of construction that was approved by voters in November 2016 is taking place. Most projects will be completed in the 2019-20 school year, but we want you to be informed throughout all phases of construction. Some of these changes high school students and staff will see upon returning from the Memorial Day break:

Auditorium – The auditorium is currently closed. The renovated space is expected to be completed in April 2020. During construction, the district will use off-site rehearsal and performance spaces for large-scale productions like the spring musical. Smaller events, such as the May 24-26 VJCAT performance of Twelfth Night, will be held in Room G-100.

The auditorium renovations will also impact access to the music wing. Music group lessons are being relocated to other classrooms within the building during construction.

Library Media Center (LMC) – The Library Media Center (LMC) will be closed to students beginning Tuesday, May 28. A temporary library space will be open in Room D-122 by Monday, June 3. Many of the LMC resources have been relocated to D-122 and will remain there until the renovated LMC is re-opened next fall. Students will be able to use D-122 as well as other areas of the school for quiet study prior to Regents exams.

Cafeteria/Kitchen – The high school kitchen will undergo extensive renovations this summer. Temporary walls are being installed to separate the kitchen work from the seating area in the cafeteria. The cafeteria will continue full lunch service through Friday, June 14. On Monday, June 17, the kitchen will be closed and the cafeteria will only be serving a cold lunch option of sandwich, sub or salad, chips, fruit and a drink. There will also be other snack options available. BC Blend will also be closed on June 17 through the end of the school year. During Regents Week, there will be no formal lunch offering, however, the department will operate a food cart throughout the exam period.

Pool – The pool was closed on March 22 for Phase I of renovations. It is slated to reopen in August for use by athletics. Phase II of the pool renovations will begin in 2020.

Baseball Field – Field restoration and renovation of the baseball fields are underway. There will be new grading and drainage, new backstops, fencing and plates on JV and varsity fields. New dugouts/storage at the varsity field are also planned.

Stadium Field – Home and visitor bleachers at the stadium field will be removed this month. They are to be replaced with ADA compliant bleachers. A new press box is planned.

Security cameras – Additional security cameras will be added to the interior and exterior of all buildings in the district. The high school and middle school are already outfitted with some interior and exterior cameras.

Other work tentatively scheduled for summer 2019 includes:

  • Window replacements in D wing to increase energy efficiency.
  • Bathroom Renovations in A, B, & D Wings
  • Asbestos floor tile abatement in rooms C106, C108, C109, C110, B101, and B103; in the nurse’s office; and in the storage room between D222 and D224.
