Delivering on BC’s mission with the help of a strategic plan

Filed in Archive by on February 4, 2020

In spring 2019, the district adopted a strategic plan to help guide decision-making through the 2023-2024 school year. Data is helping the district measure its progress in the first year of the five-year plan.

“When the Board of Education approved a new district mission and five-year strategy for delivering on that mission, we knew we had our work cut out for us,” said Superintendent Jody Monroe. “We have been carefully reviewing data, establishing baseline measurements and readjusting our annual goals as we learn more about what is working well in the district and uncover those areas that require more focus.”

As part of the 2019-2024 BCSD Strategic Plan, the district identified 72 metrics within four goal areas:

  • Academics: Delivering instructional and assessment practices that are aligned to a strong and relevant curriculum;
  • Character: Fostering positive character traits that are essential to becoming contributing members of society;
  • Community: Strengthening family, school, and community partnerships through transparent communication.
  • Wellness: Enhancing social-emotional wellness and balance for students and staff by supporting active, healthy lifestyles and promoting positive behavior.

The goal areas, Monroe said, are important elements for meeting the district’s mission: To educate and prepare all students to reach their potential, discover their purpose, and be engaged members of the community.

An annual School Climate Survey — which gauges how district stakeholders feel about the school community – is being used to provide important data and establish benchmarks for measuring progress within the four goal areas. Assessment data that includes classroom and state testing results are also being used to chart progress and identify areas where instructional or other supports may improve student success and growth.

This data is used by the district to identify and refine annual goals that are shared with staff at the beginning of each school year and are reviewed and adjusted mid-year. The 2019-20 district annual goals can be found here.

Superintendent Monroe said the district will release findings from the 2019-20 School Climate Survey in February 2020 and that data will inform the second year of the Strategic Plan.

“The first year of the plan has provided useful data in the short term, with our goals and professional development aligned to student needs,” said Superintendent Monroe. “Year two will be pivotal as we begin to identify trends and can direct our staffing and resources to the areas of greatest need.”
