person singing into microphonePaul Moylan, a longtime aide to students with disabilities in the Bethlehem Central School District, passed away unexpectedly over the weekend. Mr. Moylan was employed at the high school where he worked closely with students and was a test coordinator who helped ensure every student was provided the opportunity to demonstrate his or her knowledge or mastery of a course.

Moylan had been an employee of the school district and the Special Education and Student Services (SESS) Department for 15 years. He was also a 1974 graduate of Bethlehem Central High School.

District counselors are helping students and staff process the sudden loss of the respected aide and colleague.

“As one of our department’s paraprofessionals for many years, Mr. Moylan worked closely with our students helping them become more independent and find success at school,” said SESS Director Kathy Johnston. “He had an easy rapport with the high school students he worked with and is being remembered by them today as someone who had great respect for students in the classroom and who was easy to talk to.

“He will be greatly missed,” said Johnston.

BCHS Principal Dave Doemel said Moylan created a caring, calming presence at the school.

“His easy-going personality allowed him to create many positive relationships with students and staff,” said Doemel.  “He will be missed by all but his impact will live forever in our building.”

Outside of school, Moylan was an avid lover of music and supported local bands and musicians. He was a longtime local musician who played multiple instruments and sang in several bands over the years, according to Elsmere Interim Principal Andy Baker, who performed many times with Moylan.

“Paul was giving and generous with his experience and knowledge and he truly had a passion for music, both performing and listening to it,” said Baker.

Moylan is survived by his wife, Jackie, and his daughter, Sarah. Any information about calling hours will be shared once details have been finalized by the family.

The Special Education and Student Services Department, where Moylan worked, is collecting monetary donations for the family. Donations can be sent to SESS Office, Bethlehem Central School District. 700 Delaware Ave., Delmar, NY 12054. For more information, contact SESS at (518) 439-8886.
