Elsmere water testing results

Filed in Elsmere by on October 14, 2020

On September 28, 2020, the BCSD Operations and Maintenance staff collected water samples at all school buildings in the district, including Elsmere. These were collected as part of regularly scheduled testing for lead levels in water potentially used for drinking or cooking. The testing is required by New York State for all public schools and was last conducted in the district in 2016, when the water testing law first took effect.

In accordance with the law, samples from 21 water outlets at Elsmere were tested. These samples included water fountains that have been taken out of service due to COVID safety precautions. All samples were sent to a state-approved laboratory to test lead levels. District officials received the water test results from this laboratory on October 7, 2020.

One location at Elsmere Elementary School showed elevated lead levels exceeding the “action level” of 15 parts per billion (ppb):

  • Room 2 drinking fountain – 22 ppb

This drinking fountain, and all others throughout the school, had been taken out of service as part of the school’s COVID-19 precautions. Despite being off-limits to students and staff, all water sources were tested. The Room 2 drinking fountain will be remediated and will be tested again and confirmed to be below the action level prior to returning it to active service. It will only return to active service when these conditions are met and when COVID restrictions are lifted. The Room 2 drinking fountain did not test above the state’s action level during the last round of water testing in 2016.

A fact sheet explaining the testing requirements for New York public schools can be viewed here.

At all times, the district will ensure that all students and staff have an adequate supply of water for drinking and cooking.

All of the information above, as well as water results from other schools in the district, will be posted to the district website as they are received.
