Elsmere’s 1,000 Books Program

Filed in Elsmere by on September 12, 2017

Dear Parent,

You and your child are invited to participate in the 1,000 Books Program!

The 1,000 Books Program is an excellent opportunity for our children to be exposed to reading.  Under the display case in the Elsmere hallway there are 100 blue tote bags which contain 10 books each.  The goal of the program is to get good books into the hands of young children.  There is a special challenge to read all 1,000 books.  Each bag provides a diversity of children’s books which is a great way to expose our children to different topics as well as different forms of writing.  Most of the books are meant to be read to your child but some your child may be able to read him or herself.

Children participating in the program will be sent home with a blue bag in his/her backpack.  Please read these books with your child and when finished (within two weeks please), simply return the blue bag to school in your child’s backpack.  Parent volunteers will take care of collecting these bags, checking off your child’s progress and sending a new bag home with your child.

A name tag will be created for each child participating in this program.  This will be attached to each bag that is sent home.  We ask that this nametag remain on the bag.  Additionally, please check the bag against its book list before returning the bag to school to make sure that all the books are included.  If there are any missing or damaged books, please send a note in via your child’s teacher.

If your child is interested in participating in this WONDERFUL program, just complete and return the sign-up sheet your child brings home in early September.  Your other children, including preschoolers, are also invited to participate.  Just include their names on the registration form.

In addition, if you are interested in volunteering to exchange bags, please let us know.  These need to be exchanged before 2:30 during the school day.

If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact me.

Thank you!
