Important deadline and reminder for K-5 families

Filed in Archive, District, District News by on January 5, 2021

An important reminder for K-5 families from Assistant Superintendent Dave Hurst:

Dear BCSD Elementary Family,

As indicated in our school reopening plan, at the end of each quarter families of elementary students can elect to have their students transition from the K-5 Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) to in-person instruction OR from in-person instruction to the VLA. Monday, February 1, 2021 will be the next opportunity for these transitions to occur and the deadline to submit a request to make a change is Friday, January 15.

The Virtual Learning Academy is the fully remote option that was established at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year for K-5 students to provide at-home learning all year long. The VLA is different from the temporary remote learning that is in place for in-person students this week.

Families who are considering a change for their child beginning Feb. 1 should read the following information carefully:

From Fully Remote (Virtual Learning Academy) to In-Person Instruction

Parents/guardians wishing for their child(ren) to return to our in-person instruction model from the Virtual Learning Academy on February 1, 2021 must complete an Intent to Return to In-Person Learning Form for each student by Friday, January 15, 2021.

Please keep in mind that when families chose for their K-5 students to attend the Virtual Learning Academy at the beginning of the year, we adjusted the master schedules for teachers and students accordingly, allowing for social distancing in classrooms. As students transition back, elementary students may not be assigned to their home school so that these important health and safety protocols can continue to be followed districtwide.

From In-Person to Fully Remote (K-5 Virtual Learning Academy)

Parents/guardians wishing for their child(ren) to change to the K-5 Virtual Learning Academy on February 1, 2021 must complete a Remote Learning Waiver Form for each student by Friday, January 15, 2021. This change will be effective Monday, February 1, 2021. Information about the K-5 Virtual Learning Academy can be found here. Families of students who are already in the Virtual Learning Academy, and plan to remain in remote learning, do not need to fill out this waiver.

The next opportunity for students to transition to or from the Virtual Learning Academy will be on Monday, April 26, 2021.

Parents or guardians who have questions can email me directly at dhurst@bethlehemschools.org.

Sincerely,

Dave Hurst
