Important information about winter “higher-risk” sports

Filed in Archive, District, District News by on January 25, 2021

As widely reported, Governor Andrew Cuomo has indicated schools in New York state could allow participation in higher risk winter sports beginning Feb. 1, only if the local health department allows these sports to move ahead. This is an important decision that will require local health departments to consider the following:

  • local rates of COVID-19 transmission or rate of positivity,
  • whether there has been a more-transmissible variant of COVID-19 identified in the area, and
  • local ability to monitor and enforce compliance.

This decision for local health experts will likely take several days, allowing for both county-level and regional discussions to take place and for data to be analyzed.

If a decision is made in favor of allowing higher-risk sports beginning Feb. 1, the district needs to be prepared. To gauge participation/interest levels, we are asking families to proactively complete the sports sign-up process for the following sports:

  • Boys basketball (Varsity/JV)
  • Girls basketball (Varsity/JV)
  • Cheerleading (Varsity/JV)
  • Ice Hockey (Varsity)

Wrestling would not be offered at BC during an abbreviated February season, even if a decision is made locally to allow for higher risk sports.

The sign-up window for this tentative February season will open on Wednesday, Jan. 27 and will remain open through Wednesday, Feb. 3. Families who do express intent for their child to compete in any of the sports listed above will be required to do so with an understanding that if the season takes place, a student-athlete will not be allowed to compete in out-of-state travel competitions during the season.

The district will provide an update when it receives more information regarding a decision on these sports at the local level.
