Letter from Principal Bonacquist, Oct. 9

Filed in Slingerlands by on October 10, 2020

Dear Families,

Well, 2020 is turning out to be a very interesting year!! Fortunately, it is almost over! At least the sun is shining and the weekend looks warm for all of you who still don’t have power!

Important Information:

Arrival

Cars can enter the parking lot at 9:00.  We will begin letting cars through as soon as the buses are done, which is about 9:15.  If you are running a little late and do not see any staff member still out in the back, you may have to park and walk your child up to the door and ring the bell.

Dismissal

Dismissal is going GREAT!  We can now eek out a little more instructional time by delaying dismissal by 5 minutes. Parents will be allowed in the parking lot at 2:55.  When the weather turns bad, we will likely back this time up again.

Walkers / Bike Riders –

Bikers and walkers will be released at 3:15.

If it rains and your child will NOT be walking/riding, please contact the office and let us know.

Playground – The BC Playgrounds are still not available for public use.  This includes right after school and on the weekends.

Virtual Coffee K-1

I will host a virtual coffee on Friday, OCtober 16 at 10:00 for parents of kindergarteners and first graders. Hope you can join us!

Virtual Fun Run

If you take pictures – please send these to SlingerlandsPTO@gmail.com.

Spirit Day

Starting on October 16, we will have a different Spirit Day every Friday.  We will start this off next week with a Crazy Hat day.  This is meant to build community and have fun, but not interfere with instruction.    Choose a fun, appropriate hat to show your school spirit!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Once again, Slingerlands will be participating in the Making Strides for Breast Cancer campaign with a loose change collection.  This year we will be teaming up with Real Kids Wear Pink for this important event.

Real Kids Wear Pink brings together schools, sports teams, clubs, and organizations for the fight against breast cancer. Carli O’Hara launched Real Kids in Albany, NY in 2017 with the goal of engaging other students in fundraising and philanthropy around this important cause. The 11-year-old knew that when kids come together, great things can happen! Since then, the Real Kids movement has given kids the chance to become leaders in the fight by providing a platform to raise funds and awareness – including wearing PINK on Friday, October 23rd, the official 2020 Real Kids Wear Pink Day.

This is a wonderful community service project for our students.  They love bringing in their baggies of coins from their allowance, or money found under the car seats or between couch cushions.  Of course, bills are also accepted and appreciated. Last year we collected over $500!  We are going to set $600 as our goal this year!

The collection will begin Tuesday, October 13th, and end Friday, October 23rd. Thank you for your support.

Parent Teacher Conferences

We will still be having teacher conferences this year – they will be virtual. The dates for early dismissal are:

November 19 – 11:45

December 4 – 11:45

December 9 – 11:45

School Pictures –

We won’t have our traditional school pictures with Adirondack Pictures this year as we cannot have any visitors in the school.  The PTO is working with a local photographer to take pictures on a weekend.  The pictures will be outside, in front of the school.  More information to come!
