Dear Elsmere Families,

We had a busy week here at Elsmere! Congratulations to our orchestra students and Mrs. VanVoris for a successful District Orchestra Festival last night. The student musicians worked very hard and the result was a beautiful evening of music.

We are very excited to begin our One School One Book program. Thanks to the generous support of the PTA, the entire school will have the opportunity to read the same book: Newbery Honor recipient, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, by Grace Lin. The read begins on Monday and we will be asking trivia questions on the announcements each morning. Many thanks to our librarian, Jaimee Meyer, for coordinating this special program!

As we head into spring (eventually it will be here!), we are having conversations with students about positive and appropriate behavior in all aspects of school, but particularly during outside recess. The children enjoy playing outside and it is a great way for them to release energy and enhance their focus on learning. We remind students to involve others in games and play safely by respecting others’ personal space. Our kids are great and respond so well to positive encouragement!

Finally, I want to make a plug for volunteers for the PTA. Our PTA here at Elsmere works tirelessly to plan and provide programming for our students and community. Just imagine what the year would be like without the Halloween Happenings, the Family Formal, or the after-school enrichment program, not to mention the countless educational classroom activities and guest speakers. Please consider helping out in any way you can – no offer is too small and it is a great way to model service for the children!

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Andy Baker
