Letter from Principal Bonacquist, May 12

Filed in Slingerlands by on May 12, 2017

Dear Families,

This week we had an assembly where we reviewed all the ways that we’ve demonstrated kindness to others this year-

  • Collection for Grassroot Givers
  • Fall and Spring Food Drives
  • Coin Drive for Breast Cancer
  • Collections to Build a Well in Chad, Africa
  • Paying it forward with kind deeds

We also unveiled our last project for this year.  If you have been to the school this week you’ve had a chance to see the “Little Free Library” that the was built by Webelos cub scouts from Pack 272.  The scouts are fourth graders from Slingerlands- Nathan Barkman, Nate Matuszek, Devlin McNally, Vikash Radosevich, and Isao Knox.  In addition, Luke Grimaldi, a fourth grader from Eagle was part of the construction.  A huge thank you to Peter Barkman, the den leader, for his commitment to this project.  The library will be installed at the Merillac Shelter this weekend and there will be a dedication ceremony on Tuesday evening.  Our 4th grade classes have been sorting books to begin filling the library for the families at the Merillac Shelter to enjoy.    We will have an on-going book drive to support this initiative.  The box will be in the lobby.   Thank you for your support with this!!

Healthy Kids Week ends today.  Thank you to Natasha Ruiz for coordinating the many events!  Also, thank you to Janine Murphy for providing yoga sessions to our classrooms!  We will continue doing Healthy Steps over the next few weeks as we continue our trek across the country.

This week you received a letter inviting you to provide information regarding your child to assist us as we begin to work on teacher placements for next year.  You can send in a letter or email me at hbonacquist@bcsd.neric.orgAll letters must be received by May 31st.  We begin our work on June 1st and we won’t take any letters after this date

Commemorative Brick Fundraiser
In honor of the school’s tradition of excellence, a brick walkway will be installed in front of Slingerlands Elementary as a special way to commemorate the school’s grand 75th anniversary.

The walkway will be created using bricks purchased by members of Slingerlands Elementary and BC community members. A brick purchase will provide a unique opportunity to leave a permanent, laser engraved message to honor students, alumni, faculty and staff.

All proceeds from brick purchases that exceed the cost of this project will be directly donated to the Slingerlands PTO. The bricks will be put in place over the summer by Young Landscapes, LLC. For more information, please go on-line to:

Engraved brick order deadline: June 23, 2017

Happy Mother’s Day!!

Have a great weekend!
