New Safety Procedures for Entry to Slingerlands School

In February, the district implemented a new identification system called the Raptor Visitor Management System at Bethlehem Central High School, Bethlehem Central Middle School and Glenmont Elementary School. After April break, the Raptor Visitor Management System will be implemented districtwide.

Beginning Monday, April 29, Eagle Elementary, Elsmere Elementary, Slingerlands Elementary and Hamagrael Elementary schools will begin using the system during the school day.

With this system, visitors are required to present a valid driver’s license or government-issued ID when entering the schools. The Raptor system is intended to enhance school security by reading visitor drivers’ licenses (or other approved ID) and comparing information to a sex offender database that will alert administrators and local police. Once cleared through the system, a visitor badge is printed that includes a photo.

For the remainder of the 2018-19 school year, visitors without a government-issued ID will be asked to give their name and date of birth to be manually entered into the system and reminded to bring their ID during a future visit. Beginning in September of the 2019-20 school year, visitors without a government-issued ID and who have not had their ID previously scanned will be denied access to the school. An ID card scan through the Raptor system is only necessary the first time someone comes into one of the school buildings, after that the visitor’s name and date of birth will be looked up in the system when entering any of the buildings.

The registered sex offender database is the only official database checked by the Raptor system. A visitor’s first name, last name and date of birth are checked; no other data from the ID is gathered or recorded and the information is not shared with any outside agency.

The safety of our students is our highest priority and the Raptor Visitor Management System is an added level of security.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Director of Technology Ray Nardelli at rnardelli@bethlehemschools.org or you may review the Raptor FAQ sheet here.

As always, thank you for your continued support of the Bethlehem Central School District.
