Letter from Principal Bonacquist, Feb. 17

Filed in Archive by on February 17, 2017

Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying the journey of Minli as you read Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. By the time you return from vacation, you should be ready to start chapter 31.   The kids are loving the story so far! We are planning our culminating activity which will be in the evening on Tuesday, March 21st.   A separate letter was sent home today – check the red folder!  Please follow the Slingerlands OSOB  –

In the past month we had 13 students write proposals for an idea for a Community Outreach Project.  I was so impressed with the proposals that were submitted – we have so many kind, caring children here at Slingerlands.  The decision was difficult, but we decided to select proposals that focused on children helping children.  Stay tuned for more details!

  • Embrace Relief – – Nihal Yigit and her sister Melike have proposed that we conduct a coin drive to raise money to help build a well to provide clean water for children in Africa. We will be starting this soon!
  • South End Children’s Café – Maddy Ward has proposed a project that will assist children in Albany that serves children and families after school and for dinner. We will work on this project this Spring.
  • RISSE Refugee and Immigrant Support Services of Emmaus – Xrysanthi Sokaris has proposed that we collect schools supplies for children in Albany who attend after school programs to learn English. We will be collecting school supplies over the summer to support this project.

It’s hard to believe that the 5th grade musical is almost here!  On March 9th and 10th, the 5th graders will be performing, Maria’s RiverTickets are on sale for $3.00.  Stay tuned for more information.

We are still collecting books – primary, elementary and young adult – for our Little Free Library at the Merillac Shelter.  There are boxes in the lobby.

Now that we have some snow, I hope all of you enjoy the vacation week and find lots of time to go out and play!

Have a great week!
