Letter from Principal Bonacquist, Oct. 18
Dear Families,
We have made a change to the way we celebrate American Education Week to better accommodate family schedules, reduce the traffic in the building and parking lot at one time and make the visits more meaningful for you, your child and the teacher. We will not have a week of class visits as we have had in the past. Instead, your child’s teacher will invite you into the classroom sometime before the end of January. You are encouraged to have lunch with your child on this day – or any day. We will continue to have our annual events we typically have during this time:
- Eat, Shoot, and Read – Thursday, November 7th
- The Book Fair – in the primary wing
- November 7th 8am-7:30pm
- November 8th 8am-5pm
- Turkey Shoot (Basketball Hoop Shooting) –
Thursday, November 7th 4-7pm - Refreshments in the Cafeteria 4-7pm
- The Book Fair – in the primary wing
Tools for Schools – You need to register every year!
Registering for Tools for Schools earns money for the Slingerlands Elementary School to purchase school supplies, gym and recess equipment, resources for teachers and students and much more! This year I was able to purchase about $800 of supplies for our classrooms! It’s free, and the earlier you register the sooner Slingerlands will begin to earn points. Track your contribution on the bottom of your Price Chopper receipts. Betsy Danz is the parent coordinator of this project. If you have any questions you can email her at edbdanz@gmail.com.
Slingerlands code is 15749. Parents can register their advantage by using this link: https://www.pricechopper.com/tools-schools
Sleepy Time Stories by Slingerlands Staff
We are so excited to share with you a new feature on the Slingerlands PTO Facebook page! Slingerlands faculty and staff will be sharing some of their favorite picture books throughout the school year for Sleepy Time Stories by Slingerlands Staff. Each week a new faculty or staff member will read aloud a different book. Books will be appropriate for all ages and students can enjoy watching with the entire family! Our first book was read by Mrs. Bonacquist on Thursday, October 10th.
Here’s how to watch:
- Optional but highly recommended: get in pjs and gather your family together.
- Log on to Facebook and go to the Slingerlands Elementary PTO page: https://www.facebook.com/slingerlandspto/
- Scroll down to find the post.
- Play the video and enjoy!
Monster Mash
October 25th is our PTO sponsored ‘Monster Mash.’ This is a costume Halloween party. The most important thing about this event is that children are safe and they have a great time! We ask that children not wear masks (or face paint that covers the whole face) – we need to be able to recognize every child. Several primary aged children have talked with me about not wanting to have scary costumes at the party. In particular, they were upset by the amount of ‘blood’ that was a part of the costumes. This was true for some of our ‘walking dead’ costumes. This is a good reminder that this is a school event where the majority of the students that attend are from grades K-3. I ask that you consider this when choosing a costume to wear to this event. We also ask that they not carry accessories such as wands, swords, etc. This event is for Slingerlands students and their families. We ask that friends from other schools and older siblings not attend. This is a family event and all children need to be supervised by an adult. We hope to see everyone there!!
The PTO is still looking for volunteers
Attention “Schools-In” Parents
When you are dropping your child off to Schools In each morning, please drive carefully in the parking lot. Over the past few weeks I have had many reports of cars going too fast and not paying attention to people in the parking lot.
