Walk to School Day  -October 10th

Walk/Bike to School Day is a national event, held this year on October 10. Join other kids throughout the county by walking or biking to school on October 10! Slingerlands families are encouraged to participate in this fun, healthy event that brings our school community together. Students who walk or bike to school will receive fun stickers, water, and fruit upon arrival, as well as participate in physical fitness activities outside before the start of school. Please join us in the back of the school at 8:50 for an activity with our PE teachers. We ask that all children have a parent with them. Additionally, throughout the month of October, we will have donation boxes set up to collect gently used youth bicycle helmets. If you have a helmet that has been outgrown and you’ve replaced it with a new one, feel free to donate the old one! Helmets should be in good condition, not broken, and can be placed in the donation bins at Slingerlands Elementary. Gently used adult helmets can also be donated. At the end of October, the helmets will be delivered to Troy Bike Rescue and will be shared with local families in need of helmets, to support safe bicycling practices. Please email Gina Peattie with any questions (

Parents are encouraged to join their children on a walk or bike to school. If possible wear bright and/or reflective clothing (or Bethlehem orange spirit wear!).

When walking, remember to:

  • walk on sidewalks if available,
  • use crosswalks whenever possible, and
  • walk on the LEFT hand side of the road facing traffic if no sidewalks are available

If you are biking –

  • Wear a helmet
  • ride on the RIGHT side of the road
  • always stop and watch for traffic when entering roadway (starting at your own driveway)

Parents, please ensure all bikers (including yourselves) are wearing helmets since the event is about safety awareness.

Forever Young Fun Run – Thursday October 11th

Join us for our first annual Forever Young, Fun Run on Thursday, October 11th.  This event is in honor of the many years of service of our recently retired PE teacher, Mrs. Robin Young.  We want to promote running as a fun activity that all our students can participate in. The event will begin immediately after school.  If your child is participating in the run, their teacher will bring them down to the gym at 3:30. If your child is participating, we ask you  join us on the back field at 3:40. We want you to arrive at this time, so that we can safely dismiss the rest of the students  and buses from the parking lot . Parking will be tight – please consider carpooling, parking at the rail trail or one of the side streets near the school.

We need your help with this event!
