Dear Families,

Farm To You Fest – October 2-6

Next week is our annual Farm to You Fest.  This is a statewide celebration of local food and farms. Next week marks the 10th anniversary of our participation in this event. This is an opportunity to help students make the connection between the food on their plates and the fresh food grown on neighboring farms. We hope you will encourage your child to try school lunch, with all fruits and veggies on the menu from local farms. Children are encouraged to bring in fresh produce for the Squash Hunger drive.  Children are invited to participate in the recipe contest, attend the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, October 7th at the BCMS, and participate in the Scavenger Hunt.  See website for more information https://www.bethlehemschools.org/farm-fest-scavenger-hunt-oct-4-8/

Walk to School Day – October 4th

On Wednesday, October 4th we will participate in the National Walk to School Day.  We hope you will walk to school with your child and enjoy the healthy benefits of this leisure activity. Please join us in the back of the school at 8:50 for an activity with our PE teachers. We ask that all children have a parent with them.  We will be joined by the Bethlehem Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee who will provide health and safety information for you.  You will be notified by 8:30 by SNN if the event is canceled due to inclement weather. For additional information or if you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Jason Gallo at  jaynkim1@verizon.net.    For more information – https://www.bethlehemschools.org/slingerlands-walk-school-day-oct-4/

Parents are encouraged to join their children on a walk or bike to school. If possible wear bright and/or reflective clothing (or Bethlehem orange spirit wear!). When walking, remember to:

  • walk on sidewalks if available,
  • use crosswalks whenever possible, and
  • walk on the LEFT hand side of the road facing traffic if no sidewalks are available.

If you are biking –

  • Wear a helmet
  • ride on the RIGHT side of the road, and
  • always stop and watch for traffic when entering roadway (starting at your own driveway).

Parents, please ensure all bikers (including yourselves) are wearing helmets since the event is about safety awareness. Please review Roll Model safety information below.

Early Go Home Drill –Friday October 6th

New York State requires all school districts to hold an annual “Go Home Early” drill to ensure that students and staff know what to do in case an emergency requires school grounds to be cleared and students to be transported home or to another location. The Bethlehem Central School District will conduct this drill on Friday, Oct. 6. All students will be dismissed 15 minutes early – at 3:05.  We ask that you DO NOT pick up your child from school at dismissal that day.  All Children should ride the bus.

Our Fall Family Festival is this Sunday, October 1st from 12:30-3:00.  It looks like it will be a beautiful day!  I hope to see all of you there!

Warmly,

Heidi Bonacquist
