American Education Week

Slingerlands will be celebrating American Education Week During the week of November 5-9.  We all know from research and personal experience that children are successful when the entire school community works together.  It is our goal during this week to bring together parents, teachers, school staff members and students to continue to make Slingerlands a place full of learning and growing.

Your child’s teacher will send you information about the specific day and time that you can visit.

Community Service Opportunities

Each year, Slingerlands participates in various community outreach projects.  In the past two years we collected food that was donated to the South End Children’s Cafe, helped to build a well in Chad, Africa, and collected food for various organizations. Throughout the year we receive many requests and ideas from individual and small groups of students who want to help others by raising money or goods for different organizations. We are accepting proposals from students to have their cause selected to be a focus for Slingerlands this year.  Although we will only select one from K-2 and one from 3-5, we encourage all children to explore their ideas outside of school. Proposals are due by October 26th. To access the form, click below:

Monster Mash

Friday, October 26th  is our PTO sponsored ‘Monster Mash.’  This will be a costume Halloween party.  We ask that children not wear masks (or face paint that covers the whole face) – we need to be able to recognize every child.  Several primary aged children approached me recently and said that last year some of the costumes were scary. In particular, they were upset by the amount of ‘blood’ that was a part of the costumes.  This was true for some of our ‘walking dead’ costumes. This is a good reminder that this is a school event where the majority of the student that attend are from grades K-3. I ask that you consider this  when choosing a costume to wear to this event. We also ask that they not carry accessories such as wands, swords, etc. This event is for Slingerlands students and their families. We ask that friends from other schools and older siblings not attend. This is a family event and all children need to be supervised by an adult.  We hope to see everyone there!!

Gwendolyn and the Graceful Pig

Today the children in grades K-2 were treated to a visit from author David Rottenberg and members of the Albany Berkshire Ballet. David Rottenberg partners with local dance schools to provide a story/dance event based on his picture book, Gwendolyn and the Graceful Pig, While he reads the book, the dancers dance out the story.  The dancers were high school students from local schools. The event is provided to schools at no cost.  The event is meant to promote reading and dancing! This was an amazing experience and the children loved it!!!
