Letter from Principal Heffernan, Sept. 29

Filed in Glenmont by on September 29, 2017

Dear Families,

Next week is Farm to You Fest!  We encourage you to participate in the district-wide events planned for the week, including donating fresh fruits and vegetables at the schools for local people in need, trying some locally grown foods that will be highlighted on the school lunch menu, and enjoying the Scavenger Hunt at the Delmar Farmers Market on Saturday, Oct. 7.  Click here for more details:

School picture day is Tuesday.  Please send in the completed picture form with your child.  We take everyone’s photo, and there is no obligation to purchase photos.

Next Friday, Oct. 6 we have our NYS Go Home Early Drill.  All BCSD schools will dismiss students 15 minutes earlier (3:05pm), and we encourage all students to take the bus home.  This is an opportunity for students and staff to practice what to do in case an emergency requires school grounds to be cleared and students to be transported home or to another location.  Thank you for your help.

All our students are enjoying the opportunity to learn from our environmental educator Mr. George Steele, either this past week or next week.  He presents wonderfully engaging lessons on schoolyard ecology often connected to grade level curriculum.  For example, the 5th graders are currently studying crayfish in science.  He brings in pond water samples and helps the students explore and learn about the plants and insects from the pond.  Many thanks to our PTA for funding this for our students!

Finally, you may have heard we had a large beehive under the soffit outside near Ms. Keese’s class.  Unfortunately some of the bees were finding a way inside Ms. Keese and even Mrs. Quirk’s classrooms which forced us to relocate the students.  I am pleased to announce that the bees are gone and our students and teachers are happily learning in their regular classrooms.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Laura Heffernan
