2018-19 Welcome Letter from Principal Heidi Bonacquist

Filed in Slingerlands by on August 20, 2018

Dear Families,

Welcome to the opening of what promises to be a wonderful school year!  At this time of the year, there is great anticipation of what is to come, and I am really excited to get started!

Slingerlands takes great pride in our educational program that focuses on developing the whole child.  We do this by creating an atmosphere where students can learn in a caring and safe environment. Together, our staff encourages students to engage in a lifelong love of learning. As we focus on student achievement we will provide a variety of academic and educational experiences that promote student growth and learning throughout the year. We have high expectations and are committed to help every child succeed. We will continue to emphasize our motto, “Always our Best,“ as we teach and expect respectful, responsible, and kind behavior.  I am very proud of the talented, dedicated faculty and staff that I have at Slingerlands.  I promise that we will give your child their best every day.

We are so fortunate to have families that are so committed to their children’s education. During the upcoming school year I encourage you to continue to play an active role in your child’s learning. Parent involvement plays a critical role in our school’s success. Some ways to support and increase your child’s academic success include:

  • Make attendance a PRIORITY including limiting tardiness and absences
    • Our school day begins at 9:10 and ends at 3:20.
  • Check the school website regularly for the latest information
  • Communicate often with your child’s teacher
  • Read with your child every day
  • Limit television and social media and encourage outside play
  • Encourage your child to talk about their day with you

Your child’s elementary school years are a special time in his or her life. During this time children undergo important developmental changes. It is also a time when children become more autonomous and they transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” It is my belief that parents are the first teachers of their children and they play a central role in their child’s education. I invite you to participate in open, honest and continuous communication with your child’s teachers to ensure a successful home-school partnership. I encourage you to tell our teachers about your child’s needs throughout the year so that he or she has “THE BEST” educational experience.

The passion and dedication of our PTO has continually impacted the quality of the educational program in our school. Our PTO is an amazing group of people who commit to focus their time, talents, energies and resources for our children’s education and welfare. For the community, our PTO sponsors movie nights, the Fall Family Festival,  and fundraisers at local restaurants to name a few. For the school they support quality education by returning money from PTO sponsored fundraisers directly to the school for field trips, supplemental curriculum materials, special school programs and projects. I encourage you to become an active serving member of our PTO.
