Dear Elsmere Families,

Happy almost Cinco di Mayo! Today was School Lunch Hero Day and we thank our terrific Miss Sara and Mr. Paul who serve our children nutritious food, kind words and genuine smiles every day.

Congratulations to third grade teacher Mrs. Barcomb and her family on the birth of her son, Carson on Tuesday! Best wishes on this wonderful occasion. A big welcome to Mrs. Heather Mooney who is filling in for Mrs. Barcomb. Yes, we now have two Mrs. Mooneys.

From the oldest to the youngest students, it was a busy week. Half of our in-coming kindergartners visited the school on Friday for Kindergarten Screening, and fifth graders gathered to learn more about their Nature’s Classroom three day trip which will occur May 15-17. It is an exciting time for all!

Next week is extra special at Elsmere with three important events:

  1. Healthy Kids Week – see the flyer sent home to read about all the ways we will celebrate including Walk/Bike to School Day on Wednesday. Thank you to Melissa Hurt for planning!
  2. Teacher Appreciation Week – PTA sent home a list of ideas of how to show our teachers some love.
  3. Screen Free Week –Challenge yourself to go without screens for entertainment for a whole week! We will have a wall for students who went screen-free to sign each day. If you are looking for some ideas of what to do with your time, visit: https://www.yourmodernfamily.com/50-screen-free-ideas/ or https://www.greenchildmagazine.com/screen-free-week-2014/

(Nationally, Screen Free Week was actually this week, but it just fits in so well with Healthy Kids Week that we are holding it next week)

Wednesday is School Nurses Day. I think everyone will agree that we are so fortunate to have Mrs. Isenberg as our Elsmere nurse. Her skills, knowledge and TLC are invaluable to us all!

If you are looking for a great Mother’s Day gift, next Friday and Saturday will be the Grade 5 plant sale here at Elsmere. Stop by to buy a plant and support our fifth grader’s trip to Nature’s Classroom.

We have a change of venue for our May 23 concert. Our Elsmere musicians will perform their Spring Concert at 7pm at Slingerlands Elementary School. They have been practicing all year for this event which promises to be a treat for concert-goers.

We began using the visitor security system, Raptor, this week and so far, so good. Please remember to bring your government issued i.d. when coming to visit the school.

Elsmere faculty will soon be meeting to discuss student class placement for the fall. If there is anything you would like to share with me before the process begins, please contact me at kkloss@bethlehemschools.org by May 17. As always, requests for specific teachers cannot be honored.

Sincerely,

Kate Kloss
