Letter from Principal Kloss, Apr. 5

Filed in Elsmere by on April 5, 2019

Dear Elsmere Families,

Happy April! Can you believe that we are two thirds through the school year already? The next three months are sure to be filled with great adventures.

The New York State English Language Arts tests were administered to all third through eighth graders in New York this week. The students told me these were “easy”, “fun”, “long”, “silly” and “hard”. A special thanks to all the staff who went above and beyond to make these days run smoothly for children, including Mrs. Bellamy, Mrs. Pellettier, Mrs. Maddock, Mrs. Calaban, Mrs. Barcomb, Mrs. Buffaline, Mrs. Lasky and Mrs. Howell. To answer a few questions I have gotten about the tests: 1) I do not know when the results will be available and 2) The tests do not impact students’ grades.  On May 1 and 2, the NYS Math tests will be given to 3-8 students. Again, so that students can show what they know, we encourage a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on test days – and every day!

Next week is full of great “extra” activities for us to enjoy together at Elsmere (as usual!)

  • Tuesday – PTA meets at 7pm in our library.
  • Wednesday – The Book Huggers book club for fourth and fifth graders and their parents will be meeting next Wednesday, April 10 at 6:00 in the Elsmere library. We’re reading Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. If you haven’t finished the book yet, no problem! Just come share your thoughts and enjoy the snacks!
  • Thursday – Grade 2 field trip to the Palace Theater.
  • Friday- All students will get the chance to practice how to handle a bus emergency (sometimes this includes jumping out of the back door of the bus!). If you drive or walk your child to school, please try to be at school by 9:00 on this day.
  • Friday – Math and Science night for grades 2 and 3. Please see the flyer about how join this fun, educational parent-child event.

Spring break will be April 19-26. The Bethlehem Public Library has planned some wonderful activities for this week. If you are around, be sure to check these out.

Have a terrific weekend. If you are going to the Delmar Dash on Sunday, maybe I will see you there!

Sincerely,

Kate Kloss
