Dear Elsmere Families,

I hope you enjoyed a lovely week. We were happy with the glimpses of spring that came our way. As you begin to put away the snow gear, please double check that you have everything you started the season with. Our overflowing lost and found will be cleaned out next Thursday with any items left donated to those in need.

Our second graders had a wonderful trip to the Palace Theater this week. They said the show was great and teachers said students’ theater manners were outstanding – a complete win-win.

Congratulations to all students on earning a whole school Popcorn Party today. All year, students have been collecting PRIDE slips for good deeds and combining these slips in the office, completely filling the container!  Many thanks to Sarah Patterson, Shannon O’Sullivan and our noon aides for running the party!

Next Tuesday at 6:30 is Kindergarten 101, a special event for parents of BC children who are entering kindergarten in the fall.  This event will be held at Slingerlands Elementary School. If you have an incoming kindergartner or know someone who does, this a terrific opportunity to get important information and ask questions about kindergarten.

Earth Day and taking care of our planet will be a focus across Bethlehem next week. A few highlights from our school and district:

  • Saturday, April 13 – 10:00-1:00 Spring Recycle Fest at the Elm Avenue Town Park
  • Monday-Thursday – Litterless Lunch  – If you pack a lunch, try to use only reusable containers and create no waste (NO glass containers please)
  • Thursday, April 18:
    • Morning – Earth Day Learning Stations – Elsmere students will visit different stations run by Cornell Cooperative Extension and others to learn about ways to keep our earth healthy.
    • Afternoon – Protect our Planet presentation – At our monthly assembly, the BC High School Environmental Club will perform a special skit written just for Elsmere students!
  • BC schools will no longer be providing plastic straws. A letter regarding this will soon be sent to parents. Elsmere actually started a little early with this and students have adjusted very easily.

Math and Science Night for second and third graders and their parents is this evening at Elsmere. Come enjoy fun, learning activities together. Thank you Liz Lewis and Sarah Seder for organizing this great event.

There is no school next Friday as we begin our Spring Break, April 19-26. Whether traveling or staying close to home, the Elsmere staff and I wish you a rejuvenating week.
