August 2017

Dear Elsmere Families,

Welcome and Welcome Back for a wonderful new school year. I hope you enjoyed a delightful summer and are gearing up for great new adventures. At Elsmere, we have been busy planning and prepping for a year of learning, growth and fun. Preparing for our new school year can be likened to wedding preparations and the terrific new union that is to follow. How so? Well, we have got….

Something old

* Our emphasis on high quality education and Elsmere PRIDE will once again be our tried and true approach. We will continue to instill the joy of reading, writing and ‘rithmatic, through the common core curriculum while emphasizing responsibility and respect.

* Did you know Elsmere Elementary is the oldest facility in the district?  Although it was built in 1927, the hard work of custodians Mr. Lis, Mr. Burkhart and their summer crew, certainly have our classic building sparkling.

* While not old, our teachers are seasoned professionals who have been planning all summer for a great year ahead. Congratulations to Mrs. Fredette who is starting her 30th year at BC this year.

Something new

* Welcome new staff: Grade 1 teacher Laura McEneaney, counselor Katherine Howell, intensive skills aide Sheila Morris-Barnes, noon aide Jessica Kirk and school psychologist Cathleen McEvoy-Brown. Welcome back to music teacher, Pat Pisanello. Many thanks to counselor Penny Palagyi who will now be working full time at Slingerlands Elementary. Mrs. Mooney will be teaching second grade this year and Mrs. Barcomb will be teaching grade three.

* We have new windows with screens throughout most of the building!

* Mark you calendar with new event dates:

  • September 6     3:00-4:00 – meet your teacher and drop off supplies
  • September 7     9:10 – First day of school! Parent coffee in the library
  • September 8     6:00-7:30  – Welcome Back Dessert and Elsmere Rocks Event
  • September 12  7:00pm – PTA meeting
  • September 14   Open House
  •                                      6:15-7:15  for kindergarten, first and second grades
  •                                    7:15-8:15  for third, fourth and fifth grades
  • September 23    Elsmere Neighborhood Garage Sale

Something borrowed

* We borrow your children for this slice of their childhood and want to work closely with you to use this time to build a solid foundation of knowledge, skills and character. As with anything borrowed, we will treat them with care.

* Borrowing books regularly from the library is a wonderful way to grow as readers. Quite simply, the more you read, the better reader you become.

* Educators are top-notch borrowers of great ideas. Please share yours with us! Be a part of the PTA, which finds and brings great programs and ideas to our school

Something blue

* Our Blue Ribbon designation immediately comes to mind. While our year of designation is past, the great things that earned us this award will continue. As our mission statement says: Our mission at Elsmere Elementary is to be a community of lifelong learners who nurture and inspire the highest standards in academics, accountability and character to contribute to an ever-changing world.

* If you or your child are ever feeling “blue” about something at school, please contact us right away. Open communication with us is so important to a successful relationship.

…All that and we are looking forward with excitement to many wonderful days ahead with you, completed by a terrific marriage of learning and fun. For our most updated school policies and procedures, please read through the Back to School packet on the webpage: https://www.bethlehemschools.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/ELS-BackToSchool-1718.pdf

See you soon!

Sincerely,
Kate Kloss
