Dear Elsmere Families,

Last Friday, we began Read Across America by gathering as a school to celebrate with a Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) time. It was magical! This week, we had Dr. Seuss trivia, started some great new interactive hallway bulletin boards, had a special visit from the Cat in the Hat, enjoyed guest readers and swapped terrific reads at our gently used book sale. Thank you to the Ronald McDonald House, Lori Hotaling, Mrs. Meyer, Mrs. Sericolo, Mrs. Barcomb, and guest readers BC CFO, Judi Kehoe and BC School Board president, Michael Cooper for making this such a special start to the month.

The Elsmere Bumble Bees rocked the BOU spelling bee on Tuesday evening, thanks to efforts of Mrs. Mara, Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Sauer, Lizzy Kloss, and yours truly. Although we did not end up as the Queen Bees, we made a good showing and raised money for an excellent cause. We are grateful to the Elsmere PTA for sponsoring our team!

Afterschool Enrichment classes began this week thanks to the many hours of work of Suzie Ko, Katherine Nadeau, and Becky Ida and all the parent volunteers. Students have loved the classes so far and are excited for the sessions yet to come.  I’d also like to take this moment to thank Melissa Gold for her past years of dedication and hard work as the former coordinator of this program.

Next week, Read Across Elsmere events will include Pi Day on 3.14, where everyone is invited to read something to do with numbers or math, and Sport Shirt day on Friday, March 15. Did you know that Dr. Seuss’s last unfinished manuscript, which was found after he died, was titled “All Sorts of Sports”?  PTA will also meet next Tuesday at 7. We hope to see you there. With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, we will probably be getting some visits from Lucky the Leprechaun next week too!

Finally, we wish a happy birthday to our noon aide, Mrs. Joan Deragon who will be celebrating her 83rd birthday next week. Mrs. Deragon has been a role model for us all, emanating a positive attitude and a safe and kind environment for students for many, many years. Thank you!

Enjoy a lovely weekend,

Kate Kloss
