Letter from Principal Kloss, Oct. 20

Filed in Elsmere by on October 20, 2017

Dear Elsmere Families,

Our first CAPER of the year was a big success this week with terrific readers and announcers: Keane, Ben, Andrew, Isaac, Finn, Rowan, Esmee and Tomiko. Great job kids! Our next CAPER will be December 9. A sign up will be available next month.

After-school robotics began this week thanks to the generosity of instructor Mr. Paul Wing.  Mr. Wing, along with his assistants Mr. Degener and Mrs. King, led our young engineers as they began constructing and programming their own machines. We are also fortunate to have Knitting Club after school this fall, led by Mrs. Laura Cooper with the assistance of Mrs. Bardin. Many more classes will be coming up in the late winter thanks to the organization of Melissa Gold. We hope more parents will be able to chip in and help these programs to run.

Have you heard of anchor tasks? Teachers have been starting to use anchor tasks, or challenging math word problems as an integral part of their math instruction. Working collaboratively on these tasks helps students to apply math skills while developing deep thinking and communication. We have also been working on making math instruction make sense for learners. Here is a video to help explain this approach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnecUrHgTkc. The presenter featured in the video has many free games on-line as well http://gregtangmath.com/

Next week, many of our classes will have presentations regarding disabilities awareness run by NYS OPWDD staff member Lili Loveday. Ms. Loveday has done an excellent job helping our students better understand and appreciate people with disabilities. Many thanks to our social worker, Laura Hosford, for arranging this.

School store will be starting next Tuesday! For as little as a penny, students can purchase fun, school related items (limit $2.00). Adult volunteers are desperately needed for 1½ hour slots on Tuesdays. Come see your child at lunch time and help excited young customers make their first independent purchases. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0944aea92da2f58-school

Are you working on your costume? Next Friday evening is our famous Halloween Happenings. All Elsmere families are invited to come enjoy the festivities, 6:00-8:00PM. Please see the PTA Facebook page for details.

Have a wonderful, sunny weekend.
